about

Many of the pieces here come from perceived melodies from water sources: oceans, rivers and streams. The sound is very, very soft but can be heard under the right circumstances and with an empty mind — something like a robust unison chorus of voices singing a simple diatonic melody.
“Majorca” comes from the beach below Dea on the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean Sea.
“Kamogawa” is a river which runs through Kyoto, Japan. Once I went down to the Kamogawa and discovered a man wailing away, perfectly in tune with the melody of the river.
“Flordigan” comes from the confluence of two streams near the Olympic Mountains in Washington State, where the ashes of a dear friend, alias Rebo Flordigan, were strewn.
“Anthony’s River” comes from a dream about composer and musician Anthony Coleman, a river and their relationship. I woke up with this melody.
“Davy Lowston” is a traditional song from New Zealand. It tells of a failed seal hunting expedition from the perspective of a survivor, or a ghost, who warns of a place “where the icebergs tower high, that’s a pitiful place to die, never seal, never seal, never seal.” I heard this on an album by the great British guitarist and singer Martin Carthy, who has been collecting traditional songs and tunes for decades. This version is based on his arrangement, to which I’ve added melodies from the Pacific Ocean heard near the town of Todos Santos in Baja California. — Doug Wieselman
